Day 11 of 1000

It has been 11 days now since I started this journey. Language learning is indeed fun the more you do it especially if you use the tools that are available to us on various platforms on the web.

Duolingo has been fun and my go-to platform. I have done the lessons most of which are not too intense. There is a lot of repetition to help learners get the information in deeper in their memories.

Duolingo has changed quite a bit since I used it last in 2017 or so. The interface has changed and is somewhat more intuitive. The lesson content, I can not say since I had never done Spanish on the platform.

One of the things I noticed is that Duolingo does a lot of A/B testing. They roll out a new feature, or several new features, split the users into groups and activate the feature(s) on some accounts while not activating it on others. That keeps it interesting but still confusing especially if you would like to have, say the same points system (lingots) with a family member!

There are some interesting features of Duolingo that I think does help one do more lessons because it pushes you to push yourself like you would in a game. That is the league system.

This is a league which I believe has all the members ranked based on scores earned in the current week. The entry point is the bronze level which you gain access to once you have completed 9 lessons.

Next is the silver which you get to by being in the top 10 of 50 users in the Bronze league. You get promoted to the next league if you do well. It seems the Silver league works by that same promotion system. The top 10 are referred to as in the promotion zone and at the end of the week, those above the “fold” are promoted to the next league which is Gold.

For now I am in the Silver league. I will work hard to make sure I earn another promotion into the Gold league. It seems those in the Silver league have been earning much more points during the week than those in the bronze league.

For my promotion, I had about 950 XP or so last week. I ended up second in that league. However by contrast even with more than 1300 XP so far this week I am currently at position 9 out of 50 in this Silver league. The person at the top already has more than 2000 XP and the week is not over yet.

From my calculations, the promotions occur around 8 pm EST USA. I do not know whether there are multiple leagues. I suspect there are. Either way, it is fun to have a leader board.
