It used to be that a college education was the doorway to success. At a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree was the key to a good job, if not to a fulfilling career.

Today we know better.

Today’s learning experts know that in a world as complex as ours, the classroom-based/teacher-based educational processes we find in our high schools and colleges can never give us the knowledge, perspective, and skills we need to live satisfying lives, have successful careers, or cope with the world’s accelerating rates of change. By themselves, formal education programs can never “teach” us what we need to know to accomplish any of these things. These kinds of ideas and tools can’t be developed by just sitting in a classroom listening…

At their best, our traditional approaches to learning can only offer us two things; familiarity with the basic ideas and tools currently required by the societies we’re living in, and the diplomas and degrees we need to certify to the world that we’ve successfully mastered their basic propositions.

Beyond these two things, experts like Zull, Hollins, and Anderson are also showing us that, at this point in time, those of us who want to become efficient and effective 21st Century learners need new learning theories, better models of our personal learning processes, and new neurobiological and experiential learning skills.
