Deploy a static portfolio site with GitHub Pages

Having an online portfolio allows you to easily display your accomplishments and achievements to any one on the internet. It also gives you an online presence, which can come in handy when looking for a job.

In the world of software engineering, a portfolio gives you the ability to show off your projects, open-source contributions, interests & hobbies, or just about anything a resume wouldn’t traditionally fit.

Create a new repository by clicking the green New button or the + symbol highlighted above.

Feel free to make repository public or private but, for the repository name make sure to enter yourusername.github.io, in my case that’s furqan17.github.io.

Follow the onscreen instructions to push to a remote origin. (create a new directory on your desktop or anywhere else, and use the command line to input all the instructions)

Once you push a README.md or an index.html file to your repository, you should be able to see it at yourusername.github.io (which is being hosted from the master branch)

If your having a hard time starting the HTML file, I have provided a sample index.html file + css sheet below which has the basic starter template as seen below:

The rapid deployment of GitHub Pages makes it easy for anyone to create and deploy a static site in minutes. I hope this article is able to help anybody wanting to deploy their static sites online.
