Diameter of Milky Way Finally Discovered

This changed when an astrophysicist from Durham University in England found a way to estimate the size of the galaxy. This estimation was made possible thanks to a series of computer simulations that tracked how large galaxies, like the Milky Way, formed. According to these simulations, each large galaxy had several smaller galaxies located just outside its dark halo. These small galaxies experienced a sudden drop in velocity due to their proximity to the larger entity.

Armed with this information, the astrophysicist and their team studied the speeds of galaxies near the Milky Way. Some of these galaxies demonstrated the same drop in velocity that was common for galaxies near the edge of a dark halo. Specifically, the team noted this characteristic roughly 950,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. This led the team to determine that the Milky Way was roughly 1.9 million light-years across.

While far from a specific measurement of the galaxy’s edge, astronomers can use this estimation to search for additional stars near the Milky Way’s edge, determine other galactic properties, and find more Milky Way satellite galaxies. Not only that, but it serves as a jumping off point for astronomers to further refine the dimensions of the galaxy.
