Basics of Jupyter Notebooks

Jupyter Notebook is all we require while deep diving into coding for python in whichever field it may apply to like analytics, visualization,machine training,etc. The UI can be simple yet confusing at the same time this post will provide some clarifications as well as some tips on better productivity while using it.

Jupyter consist of cells that one can consider snippets of code one can view in same page yet run independently. These cells can be classified into two categories — Coding cells and Markdown.

Lets first get up close with markdowns first as they are easy to get out of the way.

Markdowns are nothing but comments section in your code jungle.A cell is by default Coding cell. One can convert a Coding cell to markdown cell using the drop down shown just below the help button.

Markdown with heading, subsection and latex commands

We can represent complex formulas using latex commands as shown below:

Markdown in the flesh

It is useful to add notes and references in between code if necessary.

Coding cell is where actual action takes place. Just place your python snippet here and it takes care of it.

Adding custom Shortcuts:

One can also customize keyboard shortcuts —

Help-> Edit Keyboard Shortcuts

Note:- Only Command Mode shortcuts can be added

The Jupyter Notebook has two different keyboard input modes.

Edit mode allows you to type code or text into a cell and is indicated by a green cell border.

Command mode binds the keyboard to notebook level commands and is indicated by a grey cell border with a blue left margin. This mode activated by pressing ESC key. This can be viewed as edit mode at page level. Also speeds up development.

Example Press Esc →Press A → Creates a cell above.

Knowing a tool and knowing how to use are two different tools. Learning is a continuous process, these are just baby steps for dodging various obstacles along the way.
