How Buying from Amazon Accelerates Inequality

The month of December is very busy — and lucrative — for the world’s largest retailer. As people around the world rush to finish their holiday shopping, many fail to realize how buying from Amazon increases inequality.

While the company posts unprecedented profits from its online transactions, hundreds-of-thousands of workers suffer, countless more lose their jobs, and ordinary people are pushed into poverty.

As issues of income inequality fester across the continent, Bezos is amassing wealth faster than he can spend it. That means a percentage of every dollar spent at Amazon is effectively being taken out of circulation, which in turn perpetuates and accelerates poverty in North America and the expanding gap between rich and poor. (I fully admit I am not an economist but this logic seems pretty straightforward.)

As more people shop at Amazon, other retailers close, eliminating jobs and competition in the retail sector. With less competition in the marketplace, people are increasingly forced to buy from Amazon when they can’t find products elsewhere.
