Useful Tips on Zoom Passcodes for Meeting Rooms

First, why is it called passcode and not password? Passcode is a term Zoom has smartly decided to distinguish from a password, because passwords should not be shared, whereas the passcode is shared around to everyone who needs access to the meeting, they want to try to make a distinction. It may have been a little better if they called it a ‘shared passcode’ to make it even clearer.

So here’s the tip for passcodes: You can change the passcode! If Zoom is forcing you into numeric only passcode or requiring numbers and special characters, you can change that, and you should.

By default Zoom will give you a jumbled up, hard to type passcode. You should change that to something easy to type and hard to guess. No need to use numbers and special characters anymore, the days of that are over.

The new recommendations are to use easy to remember and easy to type passcodes that are longer. Usually the longer the better with a passcode, BUT in the case of Zoom having a really long passcode is not as necessary since there is already additional multi-factor by the nature of meetings in that they’re only valid during a given time the meeting is going on.

Also since a meeting is real-time, and you can see the participants, you have the opportunity to see if someone is on when they shouldn’t be. So you can vary your passcode strength relative to the security of that meeting.

Or the alternative: Help! Zoom is forcing me to use special characters. How do I turn that off?
In the Zoom Web management portal, go to Admin -> Account Settings -> Security. You can adjust these settings depending on how likely you are to get zoom bombed but then balance that with trying to make it somewhat convenient for users:
