How to Win at Social Distancing

In these COVID times, there is a new popular game to play.

I spot the young couple pushing a pram 300 feet away.

They are walking towards me. Enjoying the sunshine. Taking their baby for a walk. I have my dog with me. He is on his 15th walk for the day. Enjoying the benefits of the COVID lockdown where activities are reduced to shopping, Netflix and taking your dog for a walk. My dog is the fittest he has ever been. And the most exhausted. By the end of the day he almost pleads with me to put the leash away and let him sleep.

The couple is now 100 feet away.

They are in the middle of the sidewalk. I am also in the middle of the sidewalk. We are heading straight for one another. Warriors on the battlefield

50 feet away — they are bearing straight for me. I have a steely resolve. I am also bearing straight down on them. I own this footpath. I am the champion of this domain.

The excitement and stress builds as they close to twenty feet. We are heading towards catastrophe and disaster. Unless one party moves, we will come within six feetof each other. We will break the Social Distancing rules.

As the couple get to within ten feet, I see the male panic. He doesn’t have the stomach for this game. He has a young family. Swiftly he changes course, speeding onto to the nature strip, over the gutter and onto the safety of the road. A road bereft of cars. His partner and baby are protected from the oncoming mad stranger.

I walk straight on. My course hasn’t deviated. It never does.

I have won yet another game of Corona Chicken.
