Inspiration and Location

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need

As I touched upon in one of my recent posts, recently I went on a short holiday to North Wales, which breathed new life into my creative mind. I didn’t write very much on the trip, but the sights I experienced in locations such as Llandudno, Conwy, and Llanrwst, inspired me to write plenty of poetry and short fiction as soon as I got home to England.

However, as soon as this week rolled around, my partner and I both tested positive for COVID-19. This of course meant that a period of self-isolation had to begin, and in stark contrast to last week’s days of adventure in Wales, I now find myself stuck inside my small flat in Manchester, England.

This twist of fate seems almost poetic. I’ve gone from being a free bird traversing rolling hills and searching for quartz on the beach, to existing in a small box. I’m not complaining, as my situation could be a thousand times worse. Although I am experiencing some symptoms of covid, they are relatively mild. I’m doing just fine. Still, it’s interesting to see how life can change drastically in no time at all. This time last week, I was visiting a 16th-century manor house called Gwydir Castle, and now I’m stuck inside a modern apartment.

This period of isolation has provided me with time to reflect. Precious time that I wouldn’t have if I was attending to my day job.

The last few days, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my sudden change of environment and status. Not only did my Wales trip provide me with a wealth of ideas for stories, poems, and artwork, but it also served as a reminder of what is important to me.

Living in Manchester, I often feel as if I exist in an echo chamber. Not an echo chamber of views or beliefs, but rather one of lifestyle. It can feel as if everybody here is moving so fast that I’m forced to match their speed, lest I fall far behind, lose the race, and fade into obscurity. Life feels like a competition. Everyone is pitted against each other.

When I stayed in Llandudno, Wales, last week, my mindset altered drastically.

I must stress that I’m strictly speaking about my own experiences. However, I have heard many of my thoughts echoed by others in the past.
