Rediscovering Your Browline and Other Quarantine Happenstances

Now’s the time to reconnect with our bodies

I used to be appalled by the idea of leaving for work without makeup on. Waking up late, I’d choose to paint my face rather than have breakfast, because you can always have something to eat on the way, but there’s nothing quite as detestable as feeling naked and exposed when your colleagues wonder silently what’s wrong with your face.

And then Coronavirus arrived, and it boarded us up with people who are used to see our puffy eyes in the morning and scrubbed faces at night. These loved ones are most likely to notice when you do wear makeup than when you do not.

As Zoom offers a protective screen between our bodies and people we interact with — by know we all figured out how where to sit to look our best— it feels like the world just became a place of close relatives who can’t be bothered about my naked face.

So, while some have been practicing meditation or learning how to bake sourdough bread; I decided to take on a project of a different kind and to let my brows do their own thing.

I am stuck at home for the sixth week in a row but my brows are living their best lives, ever.

For the first time since puberty, I rediscovered, if not discovered entirely, what they look like when left untended.

Since being closely looked at by strangers doesn’t come up anytime soon in my calendar, I figured I might as well stop bothering so much about getting ready for their looks on me.

Now is a good time to reconsider how much effort we put into being pretty for the world.

For the past six weeks, we have been barred from getting any outside help in complying with our beauty obligations. No hairdresser, no nail salon, or beauty institute was deemed necessary enough to remain open. (Maybe because we could do without all along?)

There has been no dyeing, no trimming, not roots touching-ups, no manicure, no fitness classes, no waxing.

We haven’t been able to get taken care of in exchange for money, point-blank.
