Corporate Political & Spy-Thriller Skills: A Kind of Badassery

After 14 months of arrest, the real-life dramatic escape of Ghosn inside an instrument luggage from the oppressive, inhumane, Japanese legal system (Ghosn’s words) to one of his three home countries, Lebanon, sounds like a page out of a spy movie.

Having never heard nor followed his situation before the live press conference he held on 8 Jan 2020 in Lebanon (which I watched most of it the day of), I was blown away at his professional conduct and political acumen during the event. He was a ‘tour de force’. Not to mention, he handled a room full of international and Japanese media with a question and answer session so coolly and responded in many of their own languages; he spoke English, French, Arabic, and Portuguese fluently to each of the pertinent reporters.

His performance was indeed impressive, he spent at least an hour first presenting his side of the story even with slides showing corporate-signed documents, and he had a command of the facts that he wished to present and of his emotions. If 17 years as a foreign top executive for Nissan weren’t enough proof of his industry skills as an executive, capable of expressing or pressing upon us fresh ideas, the mere fact of his smooth and expert delivery of his side of the story and combatting counterarguments and questions without an offensive nor disagreeable tone gave more credence to his further commentary of his praised professional performance famed as a top foreign executive to a major car brand in Japan about whom many institutions have studied, lauded, and published about in books regarding his management style…
