What a Shame

Free Verse Poem: A mother’s message to her estranged son

What a shame that we’re not friends
that you don’t understand me
that we’re so far apart

What a shame that I disappoint you
that I’m not what you expect me to be
that in your eyes, I fail so very much

What a shame that you never give me a chance
to be part of your life

What a shame that I can’t tell you
that in life there are times for tears
but also for joy
that one day we fail
the next, we win

What a shame that I’m not a fairy
to make your dreams come true
put a smile on your face
and tell you that everything will be alright

What a shame that I can’t be your rock
to always be there, for good and for worse
to be like a gardener
to water you like a gentle rose
and help you build your life

What a shame
that you pushed me away from you
that you think you’re strong
when I know you’re so very fragile

What a shame that boys need first to be just boys
to then become fathers
for only when they become parents
they will understand
that mothers are just mothers, fathers are just fathers…
parents also struggle with pain
cry
and get hurt

What a shame that it may take a lifetime
for you to understand
that mothers are gifts
and regardless their failures
they always care
What a shame that you’re not open
that I can’t reach your heart
hold your hands
kiss your sweet face
embrace you tenderly
and love you, anyway
