A December to remember

The days become shorter and darkness looms longer. Waking up becomes a task in itself with the chilly nights and hazy mornings, making us want to stay in the comfort of the bed all day. The pleasant climate of the month puts us on a soothing mood all along.

Magic is in the air, for it is the season of joy. Irrespective of the faith one follows, the spirit of Christmas catches upon. We may worry about the end of another year or sulk about growing old. However, whether we love it or not, the happiness of the season is infectious.

Amidst all the joy and enthusiasm, it is also that time of the year when every popular medium release their listicles. Google lists its top ten searches, youtube releases the most watched videos, the most liked pictures by Instagram and so on. Facebook reminds us of the year right from the start through the “memories”(though they had not so good memories this year what with all the allegations and security breaches). Quora taunts us with questions of unforgettable memories, worst moments, regrets of the year etc. Welcome to December, the month of retrospection.

As we look back at the year that was, we are in for a roller-coaster of emotions. The new year resolution we made would not have lasted even a week. We would have met many people this year, some friendships being made and the rest remaining acquaintances. Friendships and relationships would have fallen apart, promises made and those that got broken. We would have achieved the goals desired and gained success. Similarly we would have made mistakes and faced failures. As the end of the year nears, we consolidate the events and try to put the good and bad ( both of which are subjective) on the balance to decide which outweighed the other.

Almost everyone of us try to measure the twelve months by some form. Apart from the success and failures, the other parameters vary from one person to other. Whatever it might be, we almost always look at the quantitative aspects rather than the qualitative. For bibliophiles, it is the number of books. For the movie lovers, it is the number of movies. For a backpacker, it is the number of places visited and likewise. We very rarely reflect upon the aesthetics. As we count the success achieved, we fail to notice what gave us the real happiness. We repent on the mistakes and failures but the need to learn from them slips from our mind. Among the many books read and movies watched, we sit back and really enjoy only a few. In a tryst of reaching the target we set ourselves for the year, we do not embrace the little moments we tread upon along the path; the experiences that soon become fleeting memories.

As the new year dawns, let us resolve to not only run behind goals, but enjoy ourselves by living the moment. Let us not be confined within walls, but soar high and expand the horizon. For sometimes once we reach the destination, we might have forgotten the journey.
